UV disinfection

UV radiation and bactericidal effect

UV disinfection is widely used in water treatment as a bactericide.

The UV light destroys the DNA, the cell membranes and the enzymes of the micro-organisms by forming free radicals in the water. This involves the pretreated water flowing through an irradiation chamber in a controlled manner.

The antibacterial effect of the UV radiation is especially effective at a wavelength of 254 nm.
